• Launched in 2022, the International Master in Life Sciences ('Sciences du Vivant') at the University Claude Bernard in Lyon is an innovative program in Cell and Molecular Biology that emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches, pushing the boundaries of modern biology. It includes the following tracks: M1 Sciences du Vivant & M2 Frontiers in Biology.

Training the Next Generation of Researchers

In recent years, the field of Biology has witnessed a rapid succession of technological breakthroughs, such as the use of super-resolution microscopy, single-cell sequencing, CRISPR, organoids, Artificial Intelligence (AI), etc. These advancements are revolutionizing our understanding of biological systems. Faced with increasingly complex datasets, scientists encounter the formidable task of deciphering underlying principles and crafting simple working models that will pave the way for tomorrow's major discoveries. Our mission is to prepare the next generation of researchers to navigate these intricate scientific challenges effectively.

      Bridging Scientific Fields

Because breakthroughs often emerge at the crossroads of seemingly distinct disciplines, we have built a unique program that thrives on multidisciplinarity. We have established a collaboration with biophysicists to integrate cutting-edge approaches in this field. Elective courses in biophysics, imaging, image analysis, transcriptomics, AI, systems biology, etc, offer exciting insights at the forefront of scientific discovery. These complement a wide selection of courses in molecular and cellular biology.

      Reaching Out Internationally

Recognizing the fundamental role of English in scientific practice, our program delivers all teaching in English, with the ambition to attract at least half of the Master’s cohort from international backgrounds. We have also partnered with scientists from various world-famous foreign institutes (Harvard Medical School, Max-Planck Institute, Weizmann Institute, Caltech, University of Tokyo… - see logos below) who actively participate in our teaching units through web conferences and create internship opportunities for students in their laboratories.

Fostering Learning Engagement and Nurturing Excellence

Early exposure to a high-quality scientific environment is crucial for students' future careers. We actively facilitate student encounters with researchers through student-oriented research conferences, interviews with speakers, lab-hosted practical sessions, and three internships. We encourage student engagement and independent work using 'flipped classroom' methods and scientific project assignments. Comprehensive support in methodology and scientific communication is provided. Through this, we create a dynamic, inspiring learning environment with high-quality internship opportunities, paving the way for pursuing Ph.D. studies and thriving careers in biology.

Mentoring Individuals and Enhancing Community Bonds

We believe that providing guidance and timely encouragement is essential for enhancing student engagement and success. The implementation of generalized tutoring 'office hours' facilitates one-to-one interactions with teachers, offering clarification on teaching materials, guidance on internships, and overall support. The incorporation of group projects and collaborative work further fosters a sense of community. M1 students are assigned an M2 tutor to establish a valuable connection. The close affiliation with research laboratories forged during M1 practicals and M2 workshops contributes to increasing the sense of belonging within the research community.
